Internet Marketing Conference Vancouver

Last year I spoke at the Internet Marketing Conference Vancouver on a fantastic, spirited social media panel. The reviews must have been good because I will be back for this year's conference, September 16-18. :) Not only will I be participating on the social media panel with Patrick Schwerdtfeger of Tactical Execution and William Azaroff of Vancity again, but we will also be joined by JP Holecka of Powershifter Media and Christopher Berry of Critical Mass. This panel should be even better than last year's as so much has changed in social media and we are joined by JP and Christopher.
I will also have a second session where I will be demonstrating the Radian6 social media monitoring platform.

The conference organizers have been kind enough to provide a 20% discount to readers of this blog for the main conference (the first day, training day is already sold out). Please use discount code: imc-speaker when you register.

Vancouver is a gorgeous city and this is a fantastic conference. I hope to see you there.

Social media and the NBA

MILWAUKEE - FEBRUARY 10: Charlie Villanueva #...

There was some great Twitter discussion in response to yesterday's post about Charlie Villanueva tweeting from the locker room during a game. Many fans thought it was cool and the traditionalists among us were somewhat annoyed by another spoiled player tweeting in the middle of a game. However, I had a very interesting conversation with Glenn White, a former co-worker. who had a different perspective.

Much of the conversation was regarding the difference between the NBA's controlled messages and sponsored dialogue such as mandated halftime player network interviews contrasted to a player's freeform opinion. In other words, a traditional command and control marketing organization (the Milwaukee Bucks and the NBA) trying to control/ mandate the brand content over consumer generated (player) media. The player was not allowed to share his content and tweet from the locker room, but instead players must make themselves available to the TV network for quick interviews during that same time. Now I am certain that Bucks coach Scott Skiles was not reprimanding his player, Charlie Villanueva, over brand control guidelines. But does the player have the right to share his content/interpretation of the brand on his own terms or does the benefit/ value to the company supercede that? An interesting parallel to social media, don't you think?

Isn't the NBA being close-minded about technology?

Big video from Radian6 and news too.

da If you’ve been long time reader (thanks, Mom), you may have noticed that I don’t blog much about my work. Kind of like the separation of church and state. Actually in the past, I worked for a company that didn’t really appreciate blogging. But now at Radian6, there is obviously a strong understanding of the benefits of blogging in social media. Many of the principals like CEO Marcel LeBrun and VP of Marketing and community David Alston blog. In fact, I highly recommend Marcel’s blog, Media Philosopher, and David’s TweetPR. Also, don’t forget Amber Naslund’s very popular Altitude Branding.

Now on to the lead. We’ve got a new release coming out shortly at Radian6. It’s pretty major and we think our customers will be quite pleased. The multi-talented David Alston even created a song and video, summoning the great Johnny Cache.

Sing along!

There's a new release a comin'
It's coming round the bend,
Developments seen no sunshine,
since, I don't know when,
New slice'n dice'n features,
all part of the plan,
Unleash those analytics,
oh you know you can.

Mama always told me,
listen's number one,
And comments are the building blocks of con-ver-sation.
Yes posts they are important,
but so are replies,
Now when you see something go viral, you'll know completely why.

I bet there's people speakin' bout their favorite brands out there,
They're probably asking questions & hoping that you'd share,
Source tagging is coming,
and organized you'll be,
So let those people keep a talkin'
You'll have the history.

Well if we freed you from the dashboard,
And if emails all you had,
Real-time notifications wouldn't be that bad,
You'd know all the conversations,
no matter time of day,
And you'd monitor social media,
cause you had a way.

Ok, so what’s the Twitter angle? We shared the link to the video and it seemed like everyone loved it!

Over 30 people retweeted it.

And many people gave it a digg! You can too. Or check out more photos of David singing. As you can see, we have a lot of fun at Radian6.

Have you seen these cool Twitter videos?

Some great Twitter videos this week:

  • Ev Williams, Twitter CEO interviewed by Bloomberg. He says that Twitter will implement its revenue plan early next year, using some sort of advertising.
  • Twitter vote report: Rocketboom interview with the developers of the Twitter vote report.
  • And my favorite, from Julia Roy, a new series that she calls Tweet week, where she talks aobut news on Twitter for the past week. Julia describes some new Twitter programs like Magpie, recommends Twitter related blog articles all done in her energetic, humorous and captivating style.

Have you seen them all? Which one did you like the best? Do you recommend any others?
